Operators that form Tallinna Kaubamaja Group mostly pursue their business in the sphere of retail and wholesale trade. The Group companies contribute more than one tenth of retail trade in Estonia in general and employ more than 3,500 people.
The Group owns well-known brands like Kaubamaja, Selver, Selveri Köök, Tartu Kaubamaja Centre, Viking Motors, KIA, ABC King, SHU, I.L.U., Viking Security. The loyalty programme of the Group, Partner Card, extends to 585,000 loyal customers and is the largest in Estonia.
About the Group
The history of the Group dates back to year 1960, the opening of Tallinna Kaubamaja/Tallinn Department Store. Over the decades, the two department stores, respectively, in Tallinn and Tartu, have grown into the largest trading group in Estonia. Shares of Tallinna Kaubamaja/Tallinn Department Store were listed on Tallinn Stock Exchange in 1996.
In 1995, Selver chain store was established in addition to Tallinn and Tartu Department Stores; Punane Selver was the first to open it doors in Lasnamäe, Tallinn. In 1998-2001, Selver was developed into a chain of super and hyper markets that mostly trades in foodstuff and commodity goods.
In 2004, Tallinn Department Store expanded to Viru Centre, which resulted in 1.5 times larger sales area. A year later, the sales premises also got a boost in Tartu –Tartu Kaubamaja Shopping Centre was opened, half of the premises occupied by Kaubamaja and the remaining half by ca 60 tenants.
In the beginning of 2007, Tallinna Kaubamaja AS also entered vehicle sales and servicing market, acquiring KIA Auto AS, Ülemiste Autokeskuse OÜ and KIA Auto UAB in Lithuania, involving establishment of a subsidiary in Latvia, originally known as Kia Automobile SIA, later SIA Forum Auto. Tallinna Kaubamaja started with retail and wholesale of KIA vehicles in all the Baltic states. Today, the list of car sales companies also includes Viking Motors AS, covering all the vehicle sales operations of Tallinna Kaubamaja Group in Estonia in general. Apart KIA vehicles, Viking Motors also sells and services Opel and Cadillac vehicles.
In spring 2008, Tallinna Kaubamaja Group purchased ABC King AS and Suurtüki NK OÜ, companies that trade footwear, and their Latvian subsidiaries, ABC King SIA and Suurtuki SIA. Today, companies involved in footwear trade operate as TKM King OÜ.
In 2009, Tallinna Kaubamaja Group opened the first beauty products store under I.L.U. trademark. Today, I.L.U. chain consists of six shops that sell beauty products in three towns of Estonia – in Tallinn, Tartu and Pärnu. Starting from 2013, the chain of I.L.U. stores operates under the trademark TKM Beauty Eesti OÜ.
In 2012, security services of Kaubamaja, in operation since 2007, were separated from the parent company to form a new enterprise, bearing the name of Topsec Turvateenused OÜ, which as of 2014 owns Viking Security AS. Selver was the first in Estonia to offer electronic self-service cash desk system, SelveEkspress, in its super and hyper markets.
Tallinna Kaubamaja Group is acknowledged and appreciated trading group in Estonia. Tallinna Kaubamaja AS has been awarded the title of the most competitive retail company in Estonia eight times – in 2006, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018. In October 2013, the head of Tallinna Kaubamaja AS Raul Puusepp, was elected to the position of the Chairman of the Board of the Estonian Traders’ Association.
